Ladakh to Get Its First Government Medical College in Leh From 2027–28 Academic Year
Leh, October 21, 2026: Ladakh is set to establish its first government medical college in Leh from the 2027–28 academic year, following approval from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The approval includes a one-time relaxation of an infrastructure requirement, allowing the Union Territory administration to begin phased recruitment while construction of the permanent campus continues.
The proposed Government Medical College (GMC) will be located at Stipuk Pharka in Leh. The approval will enable the administration to initiate recruitment against 103 sanctioned regular posts, including faculty members and support staff, as part of preparations for the institution's planned launch.
According to an official announcement published by the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh on October 21, 2026, the Ministry approved the proposal following the intervention of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.
The development is expected to create new opportunities for medical aspirants, strengthen healthcare education and contribute to the long-term development of medical services in the region.
1. Centre Relaxes Recruitment Rules for Medical College
The approval follows a request made by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who wrote to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on July 13, 2026, seeking a one-time exemption from the requirement that nearly 80% of the college's infrastructure be completed before recruitment of faculty and support staff could begin.
The Ministry accepted the request and communicated its approval through a letter dated October 13, 2026. The relaxation will allow recruitment to begin in phases while construction of the permanent campus progresses.
The 103 regular posts had previously been sanctioned by the Department of Expenditure on November 27, 2024. Recruitment will be undertaken in accordance with the approved recruitment rules and the institution's staffing requirements.
The Lieutenant Governor also announced the development through his official account on X, thanking the Union government for supporting the establishment of the medical college.
2. Temporary Facilities Planned for the First Batch
While construction of the permanent campus continues, the Ladakh administration has identified two newly constructed buildings in Leh for temporary use.
One building will accommodate academic activities, while the other will serve as a hostel for students. Clinical training for the first batch of MBBS students is planned at Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital in Leh.
According to the official announcement, SNM Hospital has 200 beds and approximately 60 doctors. The hospital is expected to provide the clinical training facilities required for the college's initial academic activities.
These interim arrangements are intended to support the institution until its permanent infrastructure is completed. Before classes begin, the administration will need to ensure that the necessary teaching facilities, student accommodation, staffing and clinical training arrangements are in place.
3. New Medical Education Opportunities for Ladakh Students
The proposed medical college could significantly improve access to medical education for students in Ladakh who wish to pursue an MBBS degree closer to home.
Until now, aspiring medical students from the Union Territory have had limited opportunities to study medicine locally and have often needed to attend institutions outside the region.
For the 2026–27 academic year, Ladakh was allotted seven MBBS seats under the Central Pool, requiring selected students to pursue their studies at medical colleges outside the Union Territory.
The establishment of a government medical college in Leh could expand local opportunities for medical aspirants and reduce the need for some students to relocate to other parts of the country for their education.
The institution could also generate employment opportunities for doctors, teaching professionals, administrative personnel and other healthcare workers.
However, the number of MBBS seats that the proposed college will offer will depend on the applicable regulatory approvals and admission arrangements.
4. Medical College Could Strengthen Ladakh's Healthcare System
The proposed institution is expected to contribute to the long-term development of healthcare services across Ladakh.
Medical colleges play an important role in training future doctors, developing clinical expertise and providing practical experience through hospital-based education. Establishing such an institution in a geographically challenging region like Ladakh could help strengthen local medical capacity over time.
A locally based medical college could also support the development of a healthcare workforce familiar with the region's geographical conditions and healthcare needs.
However, the institution's long-term impact will depend on the availability of qualified faculty, appropriate medical equipment, adequate clinical facilities and compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
The administration will also need to ensure that the temporary academic and hostel facilities meet the conditions attached to the approval until the permanent campus becomes operational.
5. Lieutenant Governor Welcomes Centre's Approval
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena welcomed the Centre's decision, describing it as an important milestone for Ladakh and a step towards fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of its people.
He thanked Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and the Union government for supporting the establishment of the medical college.
The administration is expected to focus on recruitment, the preparation of temporary facilities and other arrangements required for the planned commencement of academic activities in 2027–28.
The approval marks an important step towards establishing Ladakh's first government medical college. The next phase will involve translating the approval into operational readiness while ensuring that the required infrastructure, staffing and regulatory conditions are met.
6. What Happens Next?
The planned opening of the Government Medical College in Leh could mark a significant development for medical education in the Union Territory.
For students, the proposed institution could create opportunities to pursue medical studies closer to home. For the wider region, it could support healthcare development, create employment and strengthen the availability of trained medical professionals over time.
The immediate priorities will include phased recruitment against the 103 sanctioned posts, preparation of temporary academic and hostel facilities, arrangements for clinical training at SNM Hospital and completion of the permanent campus.
The administration will also need to secure the necessary regulatory approvals before admitting students.
If preparations progress as planned and all required permissions are obtained, the college could begin academic activities in the 2027–28 academic year, opening a new chapter in medical education in Ladakh.
